The Jefferson Woodlawn Lake CDC together with ASKEW a design studio for urban youth and the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs celebrated the dedication of the "Marking Time: The Deco District Historical Markers" project on June 14, 2004.  Three markers have been erected along the 2000 - 2100 block of Fredericksburg Road in front of the HEB.

These will be the first of 10 two-sided exciting tile mosaic block markers to be erected in the Deco District as part of an Arts in the Community Grant funded thru the Office of Cultural Affairs.

The mosaics contain themes representing the history and culture of the Jefferson Woodlawn Lake community and will be placed on both sides of Fredericksburg Road along a 5 block area (1700 - 2100 block).

ASKEW a design studio for urban youth with Thomas Jefferson High School art students produced double-sided mosaic tiled signs. The program involves an apprentice program consisting of historical research, workshops, and design competition.

The JWL CDC is grateful to the ASKEW students who worked so hard on this project.  The fruits of their labor will grace the Deco District for many years to come.  We are also thankful for the leadership and guidance provided by ASKEW founders, Colleen and Tom Frost.  Without their commitment to the Deco District and our community's youth this project would not have happened.  We look forward to many more great things from ASKEW.
