March 2008 Briefing
It is with great pride and a sense of accomplishment that the Jefferson Woodlawn Lake CDC continues the completion of the redeveloped structure at 1800 Fredericksburg Rd known as The Deco Building. The old facade has been completely renovated in the Deco style; sporting a stunning façade featuring a pair of towering custom tile murals that contain a hidden feature that slowly comes to life after the sun has set. In the evening you can admire a unique lighting and fiber optic display with pinpoints of light dancing from within the tile mosaics. There are also tile mosaic accents along rear entrance to the building. The newly completed and fully landscaped parking lot in the rear is drawing compliments and kudos from the surrounding neighbors and will provide plenty of parking for the new building. Already the landscaped parking lot has hosted many events!
The shiny new face in the neighborhood has been attracting curious onlookers since it's unveiling. Even a few crafty graffiti punks left their marks on the fresh façade (thankfully, the quick removal seems to have thwarted subsequent attacks...so far so good). Nearby business owners have commented that in the short time since its completion The Deco Building has become a focal point and a source of pride for the area and they hope to see other building owners follow suit by sprucing up their own properties. Indeed, just across Fulton on the 1700 block of Fredericksburg Road, a developer purchased half of the block and is currently redeveloping the property with the plan of attracting new retailers to the Deco District. Across the street from the building, we are watching the cities first SOLAR convenience store and gas station being completed- as we speak. Numerous buildings in Jefferson Village, on West Avenue and of course in the Deco District proper are undergoing major renovation and even rebuilding. Long-time businesses as well as numerous new businesses are enjoying growth. The Historic Woodlawn Theatre, Bihl Haus Arts, and Centro Aztlan are seeing record attendance at events. Beacon Hill Neighborhood has had a beautiful modern art installation completed last fall. Monticello Park worked with the City of San Antonio and now sports a historically inspired gazebo in its park behind seventy-five-years young Jefferson High School. Of Course, Woodlawn Lake and all the beautiful neighborhoods in the area continue to make this the best place to live and work in South Texas! We are still longing for an evening dinner and music venue- but that will come! This is exactly what our efforts had hoped to produce!
As interior renovations continue, we are in negotiations with several potential tenants and we are hopeful that there will be exciting news to relay in the coming weeks. Most exciting is that the Police Substation will be returning to the Deco District and Fredericksburg Road to include SAFFE Officers and Park Police. The pedestrican friendly area will mean it's even easier to get to know your neighborhood safety officers! Please direct any one interested in the area to our website, www.decodistrict.org or (210) 732-2238 for more information on leasing and services. Residents are encouraged to contact us if you would like to view the property. Remember, this is your building; we invite you to come be a part of the excitement.
As part of the Old Spanish Trail, the first coast-to-coast paved highway, Fredericksburg Road is anxiously looking to make history again with the new Bus Rapid Transit route (BRT) being planned along the corridor from downtown to the medical center to be completed in 2012. The pedestrian friendly area will only be enhanced by this return to transportation alternatives. After all- the Jefferson/ Los Angeles Heights area was planned around mass transportation in the twenties!
